Catching up and resting up January 22, 2006

Sunday, blissful Sunday! It is gloriously rainy and cloudy here today, a welcome sight after such a long drought. We went to church yesterday since this wasn’t a serving weekend, which left us a long slightly chilly morning to enjoy by sleeping in.

Brian and I have both had hard-hitting, very long weeks. My schedule has been filled with conference preparation – both for C3 on our FC campus (Jan 25-27) and then a conference in Boston the very next week. Lots of last-minute deadlines, proofing, promoting, coordinating, gentle and not-so-gentle persuasion towards other departments and suppliers, and the requisite amounts of oops, followed by we’ll-do-this-different-next-times. Brian’s plate has been very full with the normal workload, plus preparing to launch a new site, plus writing a book. Add to that a last-minute visit from my dad on Friday night (cancelled flight = Dallas layover) at the same time that Ben was having a sleepover. By yesterday evening, I was all done!

My relaxing regime began after church when we ate pizza while watching Kicking and Screaming (frivolously fun). After Ben got tucked in, I spent the rest of the evening looking through scrapbook magazines. This morning was filled with coffee, reading with Ben, pumpkin bread, Sudoku (my latest favorite 15-minute indulgence) and reading the Weekend Journal with Brian. Then it was time for some pampering and a long, lazy shower. I am now polished, waxed, scrubbed, and lotioned to a baby-smooth state! This afternoon’s schedule includes blogging, reading, tea, chatting on the phone with my mom, listening to Ben practice piano and a bit of laundry, list-making and organizing for good measure. Brian, who has got to be one of the hardest-working people I know, is up at church while he and his team work on the site. As the weekend winds down, we’ll watch West Wing together and possibly enjoy some Asian takeout. And then, ready or not (but hopefully ready after a day like today), here comes Monday!

Well, I’d like to use C3 as an excuse for how long it’s taking me to get this post out there, but Robin did hers on the packing day before her move! Qualified Yes January 6, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — loribailey @ 6:36 pm

Just read an extremely excellent post over at 43 Folders which offers an alternative answer for requests on your time. The qualified yes is somewhere between "Nope, sorry, can’t do it," and "Sure, I’d love to help you out," (which often leaves me thinking, "What in the world did I get myself into and why did I agree to do this?!!"). This has major implications for my personal and professional life! Check out the post here.

Year-End Wrapup January 2, 2006

December brought an unplanned but not unpredictable blogging hiatus for me. Instead of pausing to post, I was wrapping, baking, shopping, shipping, merry-making and squeezing in a healthy dose of work and family time. So, I’ve captured a few thoughts from the last few weeks below:

  • It was a quiet, sweet Christmas for us. No extended family in town, so our celebration revolved around serving and attending our FC church Christmas services and then spending the day together with the three of us. Bliss! Of course, my family is the greatest gift I could ask for, but I did have a lot of fun with presents for and from Brian and Ben. One of my favorites: a collection of perfumes for mixing and matching from the Body Shop.
  • I spent a lot of post-Christmas time stepping up our home organization. Things were getting a little jumbly around here, so I sought out some space maximizers and of course worked on tossing excess stuff. One small improvement that gives me that makes me feel streamlined and cool: a stainless steel holder for grocery sacks.
  • I came up with a new word: Doh!rnaments – The Christmas decoration you find right after you’ve boxed everything up and put it away in the attic.
  • My immune system took a break as well when I woke up with an intense sore throat that came from seemingly nowhere. I spent much of New Year’s Day in bed, dozing on and off, watching tv broken up by many nicorette and jenny craig commercials.
  • I’m reading David Allen’s Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity. I’m still working my way through it, but it makes a lot of sense so far. My job was getting to the point that my simple to-do lists weren’t cutting it any more – I have high hopes for what I’m learning!
  • I just caught a special request from Robin. I will comply, though I can’t guarantee my timeliness! Stay tuned…
