Scenes of the Crime November 18, 2007

  • The scene: Kroger, Friday evening, dairy, snack and beverages aisles. John Denver’s, Take Me Home, Country Roads breezes through the store’s sound system, and individuals from all over the demographic spectrum can be found, not just humming, but singing the lyrics…including me. I stop myself, embarrassed, yet amused at the John Denver Gene planted deep within our generation.
  • The scene: Southlake Town Square, Saturday afternoon, kitty corner from the Container Store. After congratulating myself for navigating the cluttered sidewalks successfully, I promptly fall off of a curb. Flat on my hands and knees. I pick myself up quickly, thankful, that somehow I seemed to have found an opening in time when my clumsiness went undetected in this crowded area. Until I pull out of my parking space and see the patio full of relaxed couples enjoying sushi directly across from where the incident occurred. Dinner and a show.
  • The scene: Our living room, Thursday morning. I’m doing exercises in front of the Today show, chatting with Brian about a friend’s spending habits. After doing some easy math in my head (zeros were involved) I say, “That adds up to about $2,500 a year!” Ben, in a voice of honest parental-like astonishment, asks, “Mom did you come up with that number by yourself?!” And when Brian and I both start laughing he follows up (again completely genuine), “Well, you know, sometimes you’re not so good with the numbers.”

Just in case I ever start to think I am cool…
